Roundtable “Femininity and Masculinity in Rap and Hip Hop”, organized by Université Gustave Eiffel and File7, March 2, 2021.
Rap and urban music don’t always have the best reputation when it comes to women’s representation or their place in society: misogyny and sexism are often present.
Nevertheless, the evolution of this movement also reflects new representations of femininity and masculinity. What if rap had become a prime space for expressing feminist ideas and claiming one’s identity? How can it enable us to reflect on questions like everyone’s place in society, relationships with others, self-acceptance, gender, identity, and normative social constructs?
