Panel discussion – Rap and Gender from Emancipation to Transgression

conf paris hip hop

Men’s music or macho music. This is how rap is often presented in mainstream media and popular culture, which portray it as the privileged relay of male dominance. However, this type of discourse does not take into account the contexts that favor these assertions of masculinity and conceals their stakes, contours, and meanings. Moreover, since its beginnings, rap has also been used as an emancipatory expression tool by many women, and as a means of subverting forms of domination in the areas of gender, class, and race.
