Blues, rock, folk, punk, rap, etc.: contemporary music has always been one of the privileged vectors of emancipatory, activist, and subversive messages. But beneath these progressive aspects, dominant culture patterns persist, particularly regarding women’s place. In 2016, the assessment remains harsh: the contemporary music sector displays record rates of gender inequality despite the values of diversity and social emancipation it claims.
